About our company

The supplier of the well known M-Reel®

The services of supplying M-Reels® with associated equipment to the market was started in 2004 as the M-Reel AS company and continued under the present name of M-Reel AS which still utilize the founders patents for this purpose.

The goal of the M-Reel® design was to enable a quick, cost saving and environmentally better way to supply to and retrieve used reels from projects throughout the world. Even though the assembly and dismantling of the M-Reels® require personnel and tools to be brought to the work location, our goal is always to be a more cost efficient than what is the case for shipping of standard reels by freighters.

All our equipment is designed according to recognized standards and with DNV as third party for review of the design, calculation and manufacturing.

Our Concept

The concept of modular reels came about when looking at the traditional shipping costs for standard reels. The transportation costs for a regular 9.2m reel is based on the shipping volume when empty, thus you have to pay for the shipment of a cargo volume of about 550m3. By cutting the reel up into sections that would fit into 40' containers, the cost would be dramatically reduced due to two factors, a volume reduction of about 65% and of cost per m3 shipped of up to 66% (one 9.2m reel goes in three containers).

In addition the transportation arrangement via containers gives other benefits such as regular daily sailings to/from most locations throughout the world and a good competition between the ship owners ensuring a sound competition between these.

The use of M-Reels® will of course incur costs from the assembly and dismantling of the reel, but also when these costs are taken into account, the savings are considerable.

Technically the M-Reel® consist of discrete reel elements with connecting flanges bolted together. The number of bolts depend on the size of the reel, but for a 9.2m reel it would be around 550 bolts before any divider is bolted on. Another 16 off 100mm OD "Guide Pins" secure a smooth transition between the reel elements both at the rolling surface at OD 9.2m as well as in the trunnion 2.25m OD opening.

To keep the cost as low as possible for our customers we have over the years adopted a philosophy concerning staff where we have agreements with companies and personnel to work for us where and when needed. Through our remuneration packages we ensure we keep a steady group of engineers and mechanics to draw from, thus ensuring continuity in our designs and our work methods.

The work instructions are all put together by our permanent staff with feedback from those in the field, and with input from our engineers, suppliers and customers.

Certified & Tested

All our designs and calculations are reviewed by DNV or Global maritime in Norway and the manufacturing and testing of the finished product is witnessed and formally certified by DNV. The reels typically are issued a ILO CG3 lifting certificate after the successful load testing.

Quality Assured

Our Quality Management system follows the requirements, guidance and intentions of the ISO 9001. Though it is not certified, regular internal reviews are performed when activities are being performed and updates of the procedures and plans are done when this is deemed necessary due to such reviews, feedback from our clients and our staff or due to changes in codes and standards we follow.

Best materials for the job

All equipment manufactured to our specification is made from steel grade S355J2G3 or similar DNV approved substitutes and all bolts are of grade 8.8 and are all hot-dip galvanized.

The packing of the empty and disassembled M-Reel® into standard shipping containers allows for rapid transport over land and sea with ship, train, truck or even airplane!
  • Easier and cheaper transport over land, eliminating the need for costly canal passages.
  • Local transport from docks to site can be handled by regular semi-trucks and drivers, no need for oversize load trucks and personnel.
  • Shipping together with other standard containers on commercial container shipping lines reduces overall emissions and pollution.
  • The M-Reel® has the ability to be transported with airfrieght, should the need arise!

A positive side effect of the bolted structure is the increased steel thickness in beams and plates to handle the anticipated load transfer from one section to the other.

Research & Development

Our R&D is constantly focusing on improving the usefulness of our reels for various customer groups, coming up with additional equipment to promote and improving on the cost and time for the delivery of our equipment.

At the moment we are working on a

  • Lightweight M-Reels® for products with a high MBR, but with a fairly low product weight. The new M-reels® will of course also be available as modular reels shipped to customers on trucks or in containers and will typically have an OD of 10.4m to 14.4m with drums OD between 9m and 12m.
  • Selfadjusting rollers to ensure full contact between each roller over the full width of the reels rim surface.
  • 500mt and 600mt payload reels with OD's between 9.2m and 14.4m, all fully compatible with the M-Reel® concept, also regarding transportation on trucks and in containers.
  • The ReelTainer® is a small factor M-Reel® designed to fit in a standard size 20" or 40" container and can be rolled on a frame in and out it with the product on, or lifted out of an opentop container.
  • For shipment of smaller volumes of reeled products, and especially when heavy, small volume products shall be shipped a Square M-Reel® has been developed. The Square M-reel® is actually the inner part of a standard 400t (or 300t) payload reel which is delivered with a special cradle and no outer sections.

    The reel can of course not be used in conjunction with a underroller system, but is fully capable of being used with a winch type RDS and is certified for lifting with maximum payload. The shipping volume of such a reel is only 225m³ compared to 550m³ for a standard 9.2m reel.
